Alfa Matrix Records announces the comeback of Unter Null with their latest extended play discovers 'You Made A Monster'
Unter Null Makes a Triumphant Return with New Music and Collaborations
After a decade-long hiatus, the dark electro project of Erica Dunham, Unter Null, has made a triumphant return with new music, collaborations, and touring plans. The project, which debuted explosively with The Failure Epiphany around 20 years ago, has been a defining artist in dark electronic music, known for its brutal sound combined with expressive energy.
Erica Dunham, trained in classical piano, cello, and guitar, initiated Unter Null at the age of 17 in Seattle, Washington. The project gained worldwide recognition with the release of the "Sick Fuck EP," which became a worldwide club hit under Alfa Matrix in the early 2000s.
In 2005, Unter Null signed with the Belgian label Alfa Matrix, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership. However, in 2008, a fire destroyed Dunham's studio, resulting in the loss of musical equipment and recordings. Despite the setback, tracks for an upcoming album were recovered from a damaged hard drive.
The single "Hollow," released on March 29, 2025, marks a significant development in the Unter Null discography. It is the first collaboration between Erica Dunham and the Los Angeles-based dark electro trio Frontal Boundary. The single was released after the loss of Dunham's studio in 2008 and the subsequent recovery of tracks for an upcoming album.
The single "Hollow" is a departure from the aggressive style of Unter Null's previous work, as Erica Dunham also manages the melodic side project Stray. By 2025, Erica Dunham returned to the studio to record new Unter Null material for an upcoming album.
The single "Hollow" was followed by the release of "Coming Up to Breathe," on April 4, 2025, via Alfa Matrix/Spleen+ as a free download and on streaming platforms. This release marked a creative renewal with new collaborations and a live band lineup. Shortly after, a new EP/CD titled You Made A Monster was also released on Alfa Matrix around late July 2025.
Plans for live performances are underway, including a performance at the Dark Force Fest in Los Angeles in 2026. However, as of now, there are no specific plans for reissues of earlier Unter Null albums.
In summary, the history includes an explosive debut roughly 20 years ago, a long silence, and a 2025 return featuring new music, collaborations, and touring plans. Upcoming releases as of 2025 include the single "Coming Up to Breathe" and the EP/CD You Made A Monster, both under Alfa Matrix.
