Alex Ovechkin starts jersey-swap tradition in 2023–24 NHL season

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has introduced a new tradition this NHL season—swapping jerseys with opponents after games. The idea had been on his mind for years but only became a reality in 2023–24. Meanwhile, the veteran forward continues to perform strongly on the ice, though his future beyond this season remains uncertain. The concept of post-game jersey swaps first occurred to Ovechkin several seasons ago. Before the start of 2023–24, he discussed the logistics with the team's head equipment manager, Brock Myles. The Capitals then organised the process, ensuring smooth exchanges with opposing players.

On the ice, Ovechkin has remained a key contributor. Over 75 games this season, he has recorded 59 points, split between 31 goals and 28 assists. His performance keeps him among the league's top forwards, even as younger players like Ottawa's Tim Stützle—who has 70 points (30 goals, 40 assists)—emerge as rising stars. Despite his ongoing impact, Ovechkin has yet to announce whether he will continue playing beyond the current campaign. The jersey swaps, however, have added a personal touch to his interactions with rivals, marking a unique addition to his long NHL career.

The 2023–24 season has seen Ovechkin balance tradition with change, from his new post-game ritual to his steady on-ice production. With 31 goals and 28 assists in 75 appearances, he remains a central figure for the Capitals. His decision on next season, however, is still pending.
