Alex Ligertwood, the former lead vocalist of Santana, has died at the age of 79. The Scottish singer passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Santa Monica. His career spanned decades, marked by powerful vocals and collaborations with major artists. Born in Glasgow, Ligertwood grew up in a musical household. His father, a drummer, kept a piano at home, shaping his early love for music. In the 1950s, he started on guitar and later sang in his school choir and the Boys’ Brigade pipe band.

Before joining Santana, he honed his skills in bands like the Meridians, the Kwintones, and the Senate. His vocal talent earned him a residency in Rome and opportunities to work with musicians such as Jeff Beck and Brian Auger. Ligertwood became Santana’s lead singer on five separate occasions between 1979 and 1994. During his time with the band, he contributed to well-known tracks like *You Know That I Love You*, *All I Ever Wanted*, *Winning*, and *Hold On*. Away from the stage, he shared 25 years of marriage with Shawn Brogan.

Ligertwood’s death leaves behind a legacy of soulful performances and enduring recordings. His work with Santana and other artists remains influential in rock and blues music. He is survived by his wife and the many fans who admired his voice.
