Alert Issued: Temperatures Set to climb, potentially causing heatwave conditions
A series of weather warnings have been issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) for various regions in Portugal and the Azores islands.
In the Azores, the western islands of Flores and Corvo are under a yellow warning for heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms from midnight to 9 am on Tuesday. Central Azores, including Pico, Faial, São Jorge, Terceira, and Graciosa, are also under a yellow warning due to heavy rainfall, valid from midnight to 9 pm on Tuesday.
Mainland Portugal is experiencing hot weather, with ten districts - Faro, Beja, Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre - under a yellow warning. This warning is in effect between 9:00 am and late hours over the current and subsequent days.
Madeira Island is facing both yellow and orange warnings. The south coast is under a yellow warning due to high temperatures, with the warning in effect until 6:00 pm on Thursday. The mountainous areas, on the other hand, are under an orange warning, also due to high temperatures, and the warning is valid until 6:00 pm on Thursday, after which it will change to a yellow warning until 6:00 pm on Thursday.
The orange warning for Madeira’s mountainous zones signifies a higher level of alert compared to the yellow warnings elsewhere. The south coast of Madeira Island is under a yellow warning from 9:00 a.m. today until 6:00 p.m. Thursday due to persistent high maximum temperatures.
The yellow warnings in the western and central groups of the Azores are not related to high temperatures. The western group, consisting of Flores and Corvo, is under a yellow warning due to heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms. The yellow warning in the central group includes the islands of Faial, Terceira, S. Jorge, Graciosa, and Pico.
The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre are under a yellow warning from 9:00 am today until 6:00 pm on Wednesday. The western and central groups of the Azores are not affected by the yellow warning in these districts.
The yellow warnings in the western and central groups of the Azores are in effect until 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., respectively, on Tuesday. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
Portugal is not only experiencing hot weather in ten districts, as per the yellow weather warning, but also the eastern islands of Flores and Corvo in the Azores are under a yellow warning for heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms. The weather-forecasting agency, IPMA, has also issued a yellow warning for the central Azores, including Portugal mainland districts, due to heavy rainfall.
