Alert issued for Bundesweite Warntag 2025 event

The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance in Germany is conducting a nationwide emergency drill known as the Civil Defense Day, which took place on September 11, 2025. The event aimed to test warning systems and raise awareness about emergency situations.

In Baden-Württemberg, the Modular Warning System (MoWaS) was used to distribute warning messages. These messages were disseminated through various channels such as apps, radio, television, digital boards, and transport companies. The MoWaS system, which has been steadily gaining popularity, allows all connected warning means to be triggered simultaneously and with a single input.

In 2024 alone, authorities from communities, cities, districts, and states sent a total of 264 warning messages via the Modular Warning System. This number has been increasing, indicating the system's effectiveness and importance. In the future, sirens will also be connected to MoWaS.

The general public has until September 18, 2025, to share their experiences and perceptions about the Civil Defense Day in a survey. Participating in the survey can help improve the warning infrastructure in Germany. The survey can be accessed via a specific website, though the organisation responsible for collecting the population's experiences and opinions is not explicitly named.

Deputy Minister-President and Interior Minister, Thomas Strobl, made statements regarding the Civil Defense Day. He highlighted the importance of such exercises in preparing for emergency situations and ensuring the safety of the population.

The evaluation of the Civil Defense Day is ongoing, but its success in raising awareness has already been noted. The apps NINA, KATWARN, and BIWAPP, regional warning apps, the Cell Broadcast warning channel, and some transport companies are connected to MoWaS, providing multiple avenues for the public to receive warnings.

For more information or to contact the relevant authorities, the Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities has a Press Office and a Citizen Liaison Officer available. The ministry encourages the public to share their experiences and opinions regarding Civil Defense Day 2025 before the deadline of September 18, 2025.

The future of emergency preparedness in Germany lies in the hands of its citizens, and the Civil Defense Day serves as a reminder of the importance of being ready and informed in the face of unexpected events.
