The Leipzig city council is set to make a decision on the establishment of alcohol-free zones next week (Wednesday, 27th August). This move comes as the city's AfD faction proposes a pilot project of up to three alcohol-free zones at specific locations.

The aim of the pilot project is to reduce alcohol-related crimes, particularly in areas where residents do not feel safe. The AfD faction has submitted an application for several alcohol-free zones in Leipzig over two years ago, but the name of the council member who did so remains unidentified.

The proposed alcohol-free zones are not related to any specific high crime rates or areas where residents do not feel safe, but rather intended to reduce the attractiveness of established meeting points for certain clientele and minimize subsequent effects such as territorial conflicts and alcohol-related disputes.

The large number of people and groups of different nationalities, age groups, religions, and ethnicities in certain areas of Leipzig, along with the simultaneous consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances, leads to a continually decreasing threshold between these people. This situation results in increased noise pollution, dirt, and property damage, as well as verbal harassment and physical assaults.

The AfD faction argues that areas with high crime rates in Leipzig have not been sustainably de-escalated so far. However, there is no mention of any negative effects on the sense of security of innocent bystanders in the context of the proposed alcohol-free zones.

If the pilot project shows an effect, the establishment of further alcohol-free zones can be examined. The pilot project will be time- and location-limited, initially for a period of one year. Leipzig can use the state capital Dresden as a reference when drafting corresponding ordinances for the alcohol-free zones.

It is important to note that not only among themselves, but also towards innocent bystanders, the negatively affected sense of security of the Leipzigers is affected. The alcohol-free zones are proposed as a means to address issues of safety and security in certain areas of Leipzig.

The vote for the alcohol-free zones in Leipzig city council is scheduled for next week. The decision will be a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's residents.
