French Open Final 2025: Alcaraz Stuns Sinner in a Five-Hour Epic

PARIS— In the history of the clay-court tournament, Carlos Alcaraz produced one of the greatest comebacks, emulating Novak Djokovic’s feat from the 2021 final at Roland-Garros, as he came back from two sets down to defeat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) in the 2025 French Open title match.

At 22, Alcaraz claimed his fifth Grand Slam title in as many finals, showcasing a spectacular performance, especially in light of losing his first two sets. Sinner, who vied for his maiden Grand Slam title, lost for the fifth time in succession to Alcaraz, who clinched the record-setting 20th title of his career.

The thrilling match dragged on for five hours and 29 minutes, making it the longest-ever French Open final in the Open Era. After three hours and 43 minutes, Sinner held his first match point, but Alcaraz fought back, ultimately serving for the title at 5-4 up. The drama, however, was far from over.

Sinner displayed an astounding retrieve from yet another superior Alcaraz drop shot, securing a 15-40 advantage. Alcaraz was out of reach as the ball landed gently, just like an autumn leaf. Sinner won the game to make it 5-5, with Alcaraz serving in the 12th game and at 15-30. At deuce, Alcaraz made a staggering, cross-court backhand, resulting in a tiebreaker and cheers from the crowd.

When Alcaraz took a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker, the crowd erupted. Sinner couldn't find a way back, and Alcaraz sealed the victory with a stunning forehand pass down the line and collapsed onto the court in celebration. Then, he dashed over to dance and hug the team members in his box.

"I'm very happy for you, and you deserve it, so congrats," the 23-year-old Sinner said, acknowledging Alcaraz's triumph. "It's an amazing trophy, so I won't sleep tonight very well, but it's OK."
