In a rollercoaster semifinal bout at the French Open, Carlos Alcaraz faced defeat in the initial set and was pushed to the brink in the second against Lorenzo Musetti. However, the defending champion managed to claw his way back, ending the match with Musetti's retirement due to an injury.

The Italian eighth seed, Musetti, struggled to maintain his lead against Alcaraz in the latter stages of the game. Musetti eventually had to call it quits, trailing 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, 2-0. "It's tough to win like this, I hope Lorenzo recovers quickly," admitted Alcaraz[1].

News of Musetti's retirement understandably left the Italian feeling disappointed. He had played some of the best tennis of his career in the first two sets, but a sudden onset of injury in his left leg forced him to quit[2]. Musetti insisted, "It was the right decision. I didn't want to take unnecessary risks."

As for Alcaraz, he now awaits the outcome of the match between Italian world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Serbian Grand Slam record champion Novak Djokovic, which is set for Friday evening. "I'll definitely be watching their match," Alcaraz revealed[3]. Djokovic had triumphed over Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.

Sports "Not a Pretty Win," Alcaraz Lays Waste to Any Excuses

Alcaraz could potentially become the first player to successfully defend the men's French Open title since 1998, with the exception of Rafael Nadal. The Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten won in 2000 and 2001, while Nadal began his reign in 2005. Prior to the match, Alcaraz paid a visit to Rafael Nadal's footprint and took a photograph, with a commemorative plaque adorning the Centre Court this year in tribute to the 14-time Paris champion[3].

Musetti Steals the First Set

Musetti, who was competing in his second Grand Slam semifinal having reached the same stage at Wimbledon in 2024, displayed his equal prowess against Alcaraz in the opening set. With 15,000 spectators cheering him on at Court Philippe Chatrier, Musetti claimed the set with his first break point. Alcaraz faltered, making uncharacteristic errors[4].

Regaining focus, Alcaraz broke to lead 2-1, but Musetti fought back commendably, committing few mistakes. Alcaraz pushed hard for every point, and even let out an unusual outburst of frustration after losing the serve and going down 3-4, kicking his chair in the process. This strategic release of tension seemed to spur Alcaraz on, as he barely missed going two sets down.

But Musetti appeared to run out of steam in the later stages of the match, allowing Alcaraz to leverage his physical superiority to secure the victory, with Musetti ultimately choosing to retire due to the worsening injury[2].

Sports enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the final match of the French Open, as Carlos Alcaraz moves forward following Musetti's retirement due to injury during their semi-final match. Despite facing adversity in the initial sets, the defending champion demonstrated his resilience in tennis, especially in the sport of singles.
