Albert Pujols Emerges as Top Candidate for Angels' Managerial Role
The Los Angeles Angels are set to undergo another managerial change, with neither Ron Washington nor interim skipper Ray Montgomery returning in 2026. Meanwhile, former player Albert Pujols, who retired after the 2022 season, is being considered for the role.
Pujols, who spent a decade with the Angels from 2012 to 2021, has been gaining coaching experience since his retirement. The three-time World Series champion and two-time MVP had an impressive career, batting .296 with 703 home runs across stints with the Angels, Cardinals, and Dodgers. His best years were with the Cardinals, where he posted a 1.031 OPS and hit 469 home runs.
The Angels, who haven't made the playoffs since 2014, have had four different full-time managers since Mike Scioscia's departure in 2018. Owner Arte Moreno is now considering Pujols for the role, with the potential for a post-retirement personal-services deal worth $10 million over 10 years. Pujols has also proven his managerial prowess, winning a title with Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League and being named manager of the Dominican Republic for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
The Angels' search for a new manager continues, with Pujols emerging as a strong candidate. The decision may ultimately rest with Pujols himself, as the team looks to return to playoff contention under new leadership.
