Alaska's Yukon region signs accord to tackle the issue of vanished and slain Native Americans

The Yukon territorial government and the state of Alaska have signed a significant agreement aimed at addressing the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people. This memorandum of understanding, initiated in April 2024 and formally signed in Whitehorse in August 2025, is designed to strengthen cross-border collaboration and improve safety in northern communities.

The agreement has several key objectives. It aims to enhance communication and collaboration across borders, with the ultimate goal of improving safety in these communities. The agreement also focuses on better responding to gender-based violence, aligning with broader strategies to address this issue. Moreover, it fulfills a milestone under the Yukon’s strategy for responding to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Following the signing ceremony, officials from both sides met to exchange expertise, further solidifying the collaborative effort. The Yukon government expects the agreement to unite efforts to improve safety, enhance communication, and better respond to gender-based violence in northern communities.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in cross-border collaboration between the Yukon and Alaska, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people. The Yukon government remains optimistic about the potential impact of this agreement in fostering a safer and more responsive environment for all communities.
