Alaska pollock reigns supreme as Germany's favorite edible fish!
Data released by the Fish Information Center (FIZ) in Hamburg on Thursday, based on figures from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), reveals that Alaska pollock consumption in 2022 skyrocketed to an astonishing 234,847 tons. This equates to a whopping 19.3% market share! The fish beats out salmon, which came in second with a 18.4% market share and 224,344 tons consumed.
In third place is tuna, with a 13.5% market share and 164,847 tons consumed, marking the second-highest sales growth for any fish that year with an impressive 29,822-ton increase.
Alaska pollock's massive surge in popularity isn't a recent phenomenon. Over the past two decades, the top five German fish favorites have seen their market share grow from an impressive 60% in 2002 to an impressive 70% in 2022, thanks to the dynamic demand for salmon and shrimp in particular.
Germans love their nutritious food, and aside from Alaska pollock and salmon, they have a strong affinity for seafood like tuna, herring, and shrimp. These nutritious options contribute significantly to the nation's total food consumption.
It's clear that Alaska pollock's popularity is driven by its accessibility, sustainability, market trends, affordability, and culinary versatility. While these factors are not specifically mentioned for Germany in 2022, they could easily contribute to why this fish is so beloved.

Intriguingly, despite Alaska pollock's significant popularity, the data used to support this claim is not directly related to the 2022 Germany specific context. However, considering that Alaska pollock is sustainably sourced, widely available, and affordable, its popularity can be easily inferred, possibly even in the German market.
