Alarm sounded for 5 North-Eastern states: Area affected by heavy rains due to atmospheric low pressure over Bangladesh
Heavy Rainfall Forecast in Northeast India, With Red Alerts Issued for Several States
Northeast India is bracing for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next few days, as a deep depression moves from the Northwest Bay of Bengal towards the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur.
The depression coincides with the monsoon season and has intensified, causing widespread rainfall in the Northeastern states since Thursday night. According to the regional Met center in Guwahati, the downpours are due to this depression, which is slowly moving towards the northeast.
Assam, in particular, is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 30 and 31. The forecast indicates that several districts could see heavy rain (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours), with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall (over 21 cm in 24 hours).
The districts under red alerts include Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Baksa, Bajali, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. These areas are also expected to experience squally winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.
Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are also bracing for heavy rainfall due to the depression's influence. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during May 31-June 1.
The continued rainfall activity is expected to last till June 4, with some relief anticipated by the end of the first week of June.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has requested people, especially residents of Guwahati, to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant. Daily commuters and long-distance travelers are advised to plan their routes accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
The depression has caused a number of incidents, including two separate house collapses due to heavy rain in Mangaluru. The forecast suggests that heavy rain may cause localized landslides, mudslides, and disruptions in road and rail traffic.
- The unfolding weather scenario in Northeast India, exacerbated by the deep depression, coincides with the scientific study of climate change and environmental science, as it could indicate a change in the region's weather patterns.
- In light of the heavy rainfall forecasted for India's Northeastern states, it's crucial to remember that such weather events can adversely impact the terrain, threatening basic infrastructure like roads and railways, much like a game of cricket might be disrupted by an unexpected storm.
- While cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the IPL matches scheduled in India, the ongoing heavy rainfall in Northeast states, particularly Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, serves as a grim reminder of the environmental challenges we face, mirroring the challenges faced on a pitch affected by poor weather conditions.
