Alabama to Designate Ty Simpson as Starting Quarterback, According to Reports
The starting quarterback for Alabama football in the upcoming 2025 season is Ty Simpson. Simpson, a redshirt junior, has been named the starter after serving as a backup for the past two seasons.
Simpson, a five-star recruit from Tennessee, enrolled in 2022. He is known for his extensive recruitment praise, having been ESPN's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback nationally in the 2022 class.
As for his career statistics, Simpson has not accumulated significant passing numbers as he has primarily been a backup. However, his most notable performance was in a 2023 game against South Florida, where he came off the bench to lead Alabama to a 17-3 victory, completing 5-of-9 passes for 73 yards and adding a 1-yard touchdown run. Over his first three seasons, he attempted only about 50 passes.
Simpson has also shown his prowess on the ground, gaining 130 yards and scoring three touchdowns in his college career. He contributed a rushing touchdown during Alabama's visit to South Florida in 2023.
In the games he played, Simpson completed 14 of his 25 pass attempts, passing for 167 yards and scoring one touchdown. He also rushed for 44 yards.
Alabama is ranked No. 8 in the preseason Associated Press poll. The upcoming season opener for Alabama will be against Florida State on Aug. 30.
Simpson replaced Tyler Buchner after Buchner was ineffective in a game against Texas. The announcement was made by the Tuscaloosa News and On3 on Monday.
Simpson will look to build on this experience as he takes on the starting role for the Crimson Tide in the 2025 season. So far, he has appeared in 16 games over three seasons in Tuscaloosa, but this will be his first opportunity to lead the team as a starter.
In the competition for the starting quarterback position, Simpson was up against Austin Mack and Keelon Russell. However, Simpson's performance and potential have earned him the starting spot.
