Alabama star Aden Holloway arrested on felony drug charge before NCAA Tournament opener
Alabama basketball guard Aden Holloway has been arrested on a felony drug charge just days before the team's NCAA Tournament opener. The No. 4-seeded Crimson Tide are set to face Hofstra on Friday in Tampa, Florida. Holloway, a key player for Alabama, now faces legal trouble ahead of the game.
Holloway was taken into custody after police found more than a pound of marijuana in his possession. Authorities also discovered drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash. He was charged with first-degree marijuana possession—not for personal use—a Class C felony, as well as failure to affix a tax stamp.
The 21-year-old was booked into a local jail before being released on a $5,000 bond. His arrest comes at a critical time for Alabama, as Holloway has been one of the team's top performers this season. Over three seasons, he worked his way back into the starting lineup, becoming the Crimson Tide's most reliable perimeter scorer. This year, he averages 16.8 points per game, the second-highest on the team. He also leads Alabama in three-point shooting, making 43.1% of his attempts from beyond the arc. As a freshman in 2023-24, Holloway showed early promise, averaging the same 16.8 points and shooting 43.8% from three. His consistency made him a cornerstone of the backcourt rotation by his junior year.
The felony charge puts Holloway's status for Friday's tournament game in doubt. His absence would leave Alabama without its leading three-point shooter and second-highest scorer. The team must now prepare for Hofstra while awaiting further legal developments.
