Ajax and Liverpool Crushed in Champions League

European giants Ajax and Liverpool both suffered heavy defeats in the Champions League this week. Ajax were thrashed 4-0 away at Marseille, while Liverpool lost 1-0 to Galatasaray. These results come amidst managerial changes and summer spending for both clubs.

Ajax's woes continued as they failed to register a shot on target for the second successive Champions League game, losing 4-0 to Marseille. This poor performance follows a dramatic overhaul in the summer, with key stars like Jordan Henderson departing. The club now sits second from bottom in the 36-team Champions League phase table, only above Kairat Almaty on goal difference. Ajax's former assistant Johnny Heitinga is facing pressure after a miserable return to the Champions League since 2022. Meanwhile, Liverpool's £446million summer spending couldn't prevent a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray, their second straight loss in the Champions League. This follows a 2-1 loss against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, ending their unbeaten start to their title defence. Liverpool boss Arne Slot and his new assistant Giovanni van Bronckhorst will need to turn things around quickly.

Both Ajax and Liverpool face significant challenges in their respective Champions League competitions. Ajax must improve their performances to climb the league table, while Liverpool need to find their form to defend their Premier League title and progress in the Champions League.
