A'ja Wilson's exceptional performance on offense and defense propels the Aces into a semifinal clash against the Fever in the WNBA playoffs.
Las Vegas Aces Advance to Semifinals with Thrilling Win
The Las Vegas Aces have secured their place in the WNBA semifinals, following a nail-biting 74-73 victory over the Seattle Storm in the first round of the playoffs.
In a defensive masterclass, the Aces were particularly effective at limiting the impact of Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins. The duo combined for 29 points and eight field goals, but the Aces held them in check, demonstrating their defensive prowess.
A'ja Wilson, the Co-Defensive Player of the Year alongside Alanna Smith from the Minnesota Lynx, was instrumental in the defensive effort. She registered five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks, while also contributing offensively with 38 points - a playoff career high for her, tying her own record from 2023.
MVP chants echoed throughout Michelob ULTRA Arena as Wilson led the charge, with Jackie Young securing the game-winning tip shot. Chelsea Gray also chipped in with 12 points and eight assists, while the rest of the Las Vegas Aces roster combined for 10 points.
Erica Wheeler was Seattle's main threat, scoring 16 points off the bench, but the Aces managed to hold the Storm to only seven points in the second quarter and just enough to secure the victory.
Coach Becky Hammon acknowledged Wilson's exceptional performance but also expressed concern about the team's offensive stagnation. She highlighted the need to focus on the upcoming series against the Indiana Fever, which will begin on Sunday. Hammon also mentioned that the team "stole one" in the game against Seattle.
The Las Vegas Aces will be making their seventh consecutive appearance in the semifinals, a testament to their consistency and resilience. As they prepare for the next round, fans can look forward to more exciting basketball from one of the league's top teams.
