Russia's Brutal Assault on Ukraine: A Horrifying Early Monday Attack on Kyiv and Odesa
Airstrikes of monumental scale on Kiev and Odessa reportedly carried out in Ukraine
Taking the conflict to a new level, Russia launched its largest attack on Ukraine since the war began, on Monday morning, using drones and missiles. Here's a breakdown of the devastating carnage in Kyiv and Odesa.
The Carnage in Kyiv
In Kyiv, reports of drone attacks surfaced on the Telegram app, with Timur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration, confirming simultaneous assaults on multiple districts. The attacks took a heavy toll, with residential buildings destroyed, fires spreading, and fatalities and injuries reported.
Hearing heavy anti-aircraft fire, a witness reported, emergency services were dispatched to four districts, including the historic Podil district. The Ukrainian air force claimed the use of ballistic missiles while RBK-Ukraine news agency reported explosions in the city. The military administration disclosed damages in six out of ten districts, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to four others.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the attack on the capital and urged residents to seek shelter.
The Odesa Massacre
Meanwhile, in the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa, a terrifying "massive" drone attack claimed at least two lives and injured ten. The 59-year-old victim was among the fatalities, as per the regional governor Oleh Kiper. Odesa's maternity ward, medical emergency room, and residential buildings were all hit in the relentless assault. Remarkably, there were no casualties at the maternity ward.
A Relentless Barrage of Attacks
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russian forces unleashed 315 combat drones, two ballistic missiles, and five cruise missiles against Ukraine during the night. Ukrainian defenses managed to shoot down 220 projectiles and likely brought down 64 drones through electronic air defense.
Ukrainian authorities had already been grappling with an unprecedented wave of attacks the previous night. Ukraine was assaulted with a staggering 479 drones, four missiles, and 16 cruise missiles overnight into Monday, as reported by the Ukrainian air force. The attacks have been concentrated at ten locations.
These attacks came just a week after the failed ceasefire talks in Istanbul. The ceasefire discussions, aimed at achieving at least a temporary truce, have so far proved futile.
