Get ready for another round of tensions between Lebanon, Israel, and Hezbollah. Last Sunday morning, the Israeli army took a swipe at a known terrorist named Abbas al-Hassan in Mahruna, a region notorious for harboring Hezbollah operatives. Al-Hassan, a key player in Hisbollah's Radwan battalion, was on the heels of gathering intelligence and rebuilding Hezbollah's infrastructure. The army belabored this action as a gross incursion of the peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon.
Earlier, the Israeli army claimed victory in taking out Hassan Mohammed Hammudi in Kunin, a scoundrel responsible for launching anti-tank missiles on Israeli territory during the war against Notorious Hezbollah.
Just a couple of days prior, Israeli airstrikes in Southern Lebanon killed a mother of three and left 25 others injured, as reported by Lebanese media outlets. The National News Agency of Lebanon stated that she was eliminated in a drone strike on an apartment in Nabatiyeh. However, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee argued that the army had not attacked a single civilian building, claiming that they targeted the Hezbollah menace, with a stockpiled rocket accidentally exploding, leading to the unfortunate demise of the woman.
Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem passionately criticized the repeated Israeli attacks, declaring that Israel had violated the ceasefire without cause. He urged the Lebanese authorities to step up their efforts in maintaining the peace. On the following day, the National News Agency reported that multiple individual attacks had transpired in the neighborhoods of Nabatiyeh, leaving seven individuals wounded. The Israeli army announced that these attacks were preemptive measures aimed at neutralizing Hezbollah's infiltration into the area.
Following the outbreak of the Gaza War incited by the Islamic extremist Hamas’ relentless assault on Israel in October 2023, there was an escalation in Hezbollah’s relentless rocket attacks on Israeli soil. Israel responded with air strikes and ground offensives, leading to a ceasefire that came into effect at the end of November 2024. However, Israel continues to launch attacks on Hezbollah, citing numerous violations of the peace agreement by Hezbollah. These operations include assassinations, artillery shellings, and ground invasions, reportedly targeting Hezbollah fighters and their infrastructure.
Lebanon has continuously denounced Israel's strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and the peace agreement. The political leaders of Lebanon, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, have repeatedly called upon the international community to intervene and put an end to the Israeli aggression. Meanwhile, Hezbollah remains adamant against the disarmament policy, using Lebanon's upcoming parliamentary election in May 2026 as a bargaining chip to maintain political influence.
The inherent uncertainty and escalating tensions between the parties have led to a fragile and potentially volatile situation. Despite the ceasefire still being in effect, the possibility of another confrontation remains a real concern.
