International Maltese Waters: Humanitarian Aid Vessel Under Attack
Airstrike on 'Liberty Voyage' humanitarian vessel en route to Gaza was conducted off the coast of Malta; organisers accusingly point fingers at Israel.
In the face of a worsening crisis in Gaza, a vessel delivering much-needed aid has been targeted in an attack in international waters off Malta. According to the organizing coalition, the strike happened on the Conscience, a ship carrying aid and civilians towards the blockaded Gaza strip.
A startling event transpired as the Conscience, hosting 12 crew members and four civilians, was struck by drones 26 kilometers from Malta's coast. Remarkably, the onboard team managed to control the ensuing fire's damage, and though injuries were reportedly not sustained, the vessel bore visible signs of trauma. The Israeli military has yet to comment on the allegations of being behind the attack.
The incident bears a chilling resemblance to the 2010 raid on the Mavi Marmara, where Israeli forces killed nine activists during a previous aid flotilla bound for Gaza.
A Humanitarian Disaster Unfolding
Gaza is currently suffering under an escalating humanitarian catastrophe. Food and medicine imports have been halted since March, causing critical shortages of essential goods. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expressed grave concerns that its relief operations may soon collapse if immediate action isn't taken. Facing the brink of collapse are communal kitchens, which provide critical sustenance for numerous Gaza residents.
"Civilians must be protected, aid must be allowed, and hostages must be released," the ICRC asserted, stressing that the precarious situation in Gaza will only worsen without immediate action.
The conflict began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in around 1,200 casualties, chiefly civilians. Hamas has since taken 251 hostages, 59 of whom are believed to still be alive. Over 52,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict's inception, with hospitals in Gaza facing a dire shortage of medical supplies and visiting civilians struggling to access necessary healthcare services.
Gaza: Suffering in Silence
While recent attacks on aid ships might be scarce in the news, the repercussions of the prolonged conflict in Gaza continue unabated. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and international organizations call upon the world to take immediate action to lift the blockade and ensure a ceasefire, citing the ongoing suffering of children specifically and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
