Tragedy in Gaza: Famous Journalist Anas Al Sharif Killed in Israeli Airstrike

In a shocking turn of events, Anas Al Sharif, a renowned journalist reporting from Gaza, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on August 10, 2025. Al Sharif, a prominent correspondent for Al Jazeera, was among five journalists killed in the attack, which Israel acknowledged, alleging that al-Sharif was a Hamas leader—a claim Al Jazeera and al-Sharif had denied as baseless [1][2].

Al-Sharif had joined Al Jazeera shortly after the war began in October 2023, covering Israel’s bombardment in northern Gaza and the severe humanitarian crisis, including widespread hunger. He was known for emotional broadcasts, such as one in July 2025 where he cried on air while witnessing a woman collapse from apparent malnutrition [1].

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the strike and criticized Israel’s pattern of accusing journalists of militancy without credible evidence, emphasizing this as a serious violation of press freedom. At least 178 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed during the course of the war, with the Al Jazeera journalists’ deaths raising the total number of their staff journalists killed by Israel in Gaza during the conflict to ten [1][2].

The CPJ also accused the Israel Defense Forces of launching a "smear campaign" against Al Sharif, which he believed was a precursor to his assassination. Samy Zyara, Nasser Atta, and Jordana Miller, who contributed to the report on the developments regarding Al Sharif, highlighted this smear campaign [1][2].

The death of Al Sharif is part of a broader pattern of deadly risks faced by Palestinian journalists in Gaza, compounded by Israel’s refusal to permit many international journalists inside the territory, putting local journalists like Al Sharif at great risk while covering the war [1][2].

In a statement, Al Jazeera condemned the targeted assassination of its journalists and stated that the attack was a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a house fire in southern Maryland resulted in the death of 4 kids and 2 adults on August 10, 20XX. This tragic event is not related to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

A mass shooting occurred in Chicago, resulting in one death and five injuries, according to police. This incident, however, is not connected to the previous events discussed in this article.

  1. The Committee to Protect Journalists' (CPJ) criticism of Israel's pattern stemmed from the country's practice of accusing journalists such as Al Sharif of militancy without credible evidence, a violation of press freedom.
  2. Al Sharif's death is not the sole tragic event in war-and-conflicts or crime-and-justice news, as a house fire in southern Maryland resulted in the death of 6 individuals on August 10, 20XX, unrelated to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
  3. In politics, the CPJ's accusation of the Israel Defense Forces' smear campaign against Al Sharif was seen by him as a precursor to his assassination, adding to the growing tension in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.
