In the morning of August 9, 2025, a series of drone attacks were reported across several Russian regions, marking an escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Restrictions on accepting and releasing aircraft were imposed at airports in Kaluga, Saratov, Izhevsk, and Vladikavkaz, as the Russian Ministry of Defense scrambled to respond to the threats. These restrictions were later lifted, according to TASS.

Simultaneously, six Ukrainian drones were destroyed over the Bryansk region, and seven over the Azov Sea. The most significant attack was carried out on the Kursk region, where 28 drones were destroyed. One Ukrainian drone was also shot down over Crimea, and three over the Black Sea.

The Ministry of Defense successfully shot down two drones that were heading for Moscow, at 9:32 am and 10:08 am respectively. The crash sites of the downed drones are being worked on by specialists from emergency services.

According to reports, these increased drone attacks were part of Ukraine's strategic effort to disrupt and degrade Russia's drone production capabilities. The primary target was a key drone storage and assembly facility in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone of Tatarstan, which produces up to 90% of Russia's Shahed drones, critical to Russia's long-range strike arsenal.

Ukraine aimed to prevent Russia from meeting its ambitious production targets, including plans to build 79,000 Shahed-type drones in 2025, by damaging production lines and logistics hubs deep inside Russian territory. This reflects an ongoing campaign to weaken Putin’s escalating drone war, which has seen Russia launch record numbers of drone attacks against Ukraine, prompting Ukraine to enhance its own drone strike capabilities deep into Russian territory.

Overnight on August 9, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a total of 97 UAVs were shot down in the skies over Russia, excluding the one approaching Moscow. This marked one of the most significant days of UAV combat in recent Russian history.
