Airstrike carried out by Israel results in the death of 5 Al Jazeera reporters, including Anas Al Sharif, according to the network's report in Gaza

In the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, Anas Al Sharif, a well-known journalist reporting from Gaza with millions of social media followers, was tragically killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on August 10, 2025.

Al Sharif, who began reporting for Al Jazeera shortly after the war began in 2023, was covering Israel's bombardment and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including malnutrition and hunger. In a recent broadcast prior to his death, he emotionally reported on the slow death of people in Gaza due to malnutrition.

Israel claimed responsibility for the strike and accused Al Sharif of being a leader of a Hamas cell, an allegation dismissed as baseless by Al Jazeera and Al Sharif himself. The attack was explicitly labeled by Al Jazeera as a "targeted assassination".

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the strike, criticizing Israel’s pattern of labeling journalists as militants without credible evidence and raising serious concerns about press freedom. The CPJ also expressed grave concerns about Al Sharif's safety and accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of launching a smear campaign against him.

The CPJ's report states that at least 178 of the killed journalists were Palestinians, and 186 journalists have been killed since the start of the Israel-Gaza war on Oct. 7, 2023. According to international press watchdogs, Israel has killed more journalists during this conflict than worldwide in the preceding three years, making such attacks deliberate and systematic and constituting war crimes under international law.

Al Jazeera’s offices have faced restrictions and raids in the region, and Israel has largely barred international journalists from Gaza, placing greater risk on Palestinian journalists like Al Sharif. In total, at least 10 Al Jazeera journalists have been killed by Israel in Gaza during this war.

Al Sharif posted to his social media accounts minutes before his death, and Al Jazeera condemned the targeted assassination of its journalists, describing the attack as a desperate attempt to silence voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza. The CPJ's report on journalist deaths is a developing story, and updates are expected.
