Airstrike carried out by Israel claims lives of 10 individuals, including 5 children, amidst mediated attempts to reestablish a truce

A Fresh Take

In the heated aftermath of yesterday's events, a devastating Israeli airstrike flattened a three-story home in Gaza City, claiming the lives of 10 - including 5 children and 3 women. The horrific incident occured amidst frenzied efforts by Arab mediators to reignite a ceasefire.

According to reports, Israeli strikes has resulted in the death of at least 49 individuals over the past 24 hours, as per health officials in the region.

The victims from the early morning airstrike in a western neighborhood of Gaza City included innocent civilians. Shifa Hospital confirmed these casualties.

Israel's military asserted that they targeted a Hamas militant and the structure where he operated, claiming the structure collapsed. The military further stated that the collapse is under review.

A grief-stricken survivor, Saed Al-Khour, lost his family in the strike, lamenting, "Since 1 o'clock until now we have been pulling out the remains of children, women and elderly people." He stood amongst the remnants of his home, under a tilted ceiling.

Three more lives were claimed in the Shati refugee camp along Gaza City's shoreline.

Hamas announced that it had delegated a high-level team to Cairo to reinitiate the ceasefire, fractured last month by Israeli bombardment.

Israel, however, remains resolute, vowing to continue the war until every hostage is returned, and Hamas is dismantled or forced into exile. Israel also intends to keep parts of Gaza under indefinite occupation and implement U.S President Donald Trump's plan for resettling the population in other countries, a move met with widespread international criticism.

Hamas, on the other hand, insists on releasing the hostages they hold in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a complete Israeli withdrawal, and a permanent ceasefire, as called for in the now-defunct agreement reached in January.

Hamas's delegation in Cairo will discuss a proposed truce lasting between 5 to 7 years, along with the release of all remaining hostages, and the gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. This proposal is developed by Egypt and Qatar[1][2].

Recent developments suggest that Qatari involvement in negotiations may have added complexity, potentially stalling a resolution[4]. Despite this, negotiations between Hamas and Egypt continue, aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza.

Earlier this week, Hamas officials arrived in Cairo to discuss a proposal that included a 5-year truce and the release of all hostages[2]. The World Food Program has reported that its food stocks in Gaza have depleted, affecting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians[5]. Meanwhile, nearly 3,000 UNRWA trucks of emergency aid are waiting to enter Gaza, urging for an end to the siege.

Hamas criticized the U.S. administration for its decisions against the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, revealing the complexity of the ongoing conflict[6]. As of now, the death toll stands at over 51,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, with Israel claiming to have killed around 20,000 militants[7]. The war commenced when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 on Oct. 7, 2023. The militants currently have 59 hostages, 24 believed to be alive[7].
