Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, known for his cozy ties with Moscow, is stuck being the lone EU head honcho riding the Russian transit for World War II commemorations, only to find the doors slamming shut when it comes to flying over the Baltics. Seems like a real clusterfuck for Fico's schedule.

With the Baltic pups - including Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia - snubbing his government jet, Fico's plane took to the skies from Bratislava, but with a real detour taking it through Hungary, Romania, the Black Sea, Georgia, and eventually sneaking into Dagestan. AirNav predicts landing time in Moscow to be around 21:30 local time (20:30 CET). This zigzagging route ain't nothing new, as European airlines have opted to skip Lithuania's airspace since 2021 due to those sanctions against the Minsk government that forced a Western plane to land with a Belarusian fighter jet.

The Baltic states refused the passing pleasure of Fico and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, just like Gitanas Nauseda, President of Lithuania, slyly planned to block the overflights. Latvia gave a big ol' "nope" to any flights to Moscow's celebrations, while Estonia announced they'd seal their skies against Fico's approach. In a confessional post on Facebook, Fico admitted his disappointment, mentioning it caused a real scheduling headache.

With the Baltics acting like they got scores to settle and Fico failing to score a seat at the EU's anti-Moscow parade, he's still keeping up his bold move to land in Russia for the 9th May celebrations, even when the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, told EU leaders to keep a healthy distance from Putin's military shindig.
