Airport in Volgograd Removes Flight Restrictions Following Three-Hour Period

In the heart of Russia, the Traktorozavodsky District of Volgograd witnessed an unprecedented event on the night of August 18-19, 2025. A drone attack targeted the Lukoil oil refinery, causing multiple fires, including at the refinery and a hospital roof, after debris from the drones fell in southern Volgograd.

The attack, reported by Governor Andrei Bocharov as massive, also resulted in temporary flight restrictions at Volgograd Airport. The airport was shut down following the attack, with flight operations resuming later at 4:34 Moscow time. During the restriction period, two aircraft were diverted to alternate airports.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and firefighters managed to contain the fires that erupted as a result of the attack. The refinery, a critical fuel producer in southern Russia, has been hit multiple times in recent weeks, causing operations to be suspended until at least mid-September due to damage to key distillation units.

In response to the incident, a temporary accommodation center was set up in Volgograd for the duration of the building inspection and debris cleanup. As of the latest updates, there has been no information regarding similar incidents at Izhevsk Airport.

The Lukoil oil refinery attack marks a significant event in Russia's recent history, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures in critical infrastructure sectors. The situation is under control, and life in Volgograd is gradually returning to normal.
