Airport expansion in Casablanca accommodates World Cup events
In a significant move for the aviation industry, French company Safran has announced plans to build a new maintenance workshop for LEAP engines in Casablanca, Morocco. The facility, expected to be operational by 2026, is part of Morocco's national strategy for airport expansion by 2030.
The expansion of Casablanca Airport is a key component of this strategy. The new terminal, scheduled for completion by 2029, aims to increase the airport's passenger capacity from 10.5 million to 35 million. The new terminal will also serve as an African hub, further bolstering Morocco's position as a continental aviation hub.
The expansion of Casablanca Airport is not the only infrastructure development in Morocco. Airports in Marrakesh and Agadir are also planned to be expanded to accommodate 14 million and 6.3 million passengers, respectively. These expansions are aimed at meeting the growing demands of air traffic.
The new terminal at Casablanca Airport is part of Morocco's preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The high-speed rail network will be extended to provide better connectivity between cities in Morocco, making travel more efficient for both tourists and locals.
The maintenance workshop in Casablanca will increase maintenance capacity for modern aircraft engines in the region. The workshop is expected to create around 600 direct jobs, contributing to Morocco's economy.

Morocco aims to increase the total capacity of its airports to 80 million passengers by 2030, compared to 38 million in 2024. This ambitious goal requires an investment of 15 billion Dirham (approximately 1.43 billion Euros) in the construction of the new terminal at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca.
The expansion of airport infrastructure in Morocco is more than just a response to the growing demands of air traffic. It is a strategic move that positions Morocco as a key player in the aviation industry, both regionally and globally. The new maintenance workshop and the expansion of airports in Casablanca, Marrakesh, and Agadir are significant steps towards this goal.
