Airport chaos: 93 flights disrupted, three passengers injured due to emergency landing in Birmingham
On August 6, 2025, a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air made an emergency landing at Birmingham Airport with a collapsed main landing gear. The incident, which occurred around 1:40 PM, resulted in a temporary closure of the runway and significant disruptions to flights.
The aircraft, which was originally bound for Belfast, Northern Ireland, took off at 12:11 PM. The emergency landing caused over six hours of runway closure, leading to numerous flight delays, diversions, and cancellations.
One person onboard sustained minor injuries, but all passengers and crew were safely discharged by emergency services. The airport had to temporarily close check-in services and security screening during the response.
Social media and flight tracking sources confirmed the stationary Beech B200 on the runway following the emergency landing. The collapsed main landing gear was the primary cause of the emergency, though no fatalities or severe injuries were reported.
The airport, the seventh-largest in the UK and the third biggest outside of London, had about 11.5 million passengers in 2023. It has about 130 direct routes served by 30 airlines. Some flights listed on the departures page of the airport's website were cancelled, including to Paris Charles de Gaulle, Brussels, and Belfast International.
The incident caused a ripple effect, with Ryanair and Jet2 flights being diverted to Stansted and Manchester airports instead. The airport was crowded with annoyed travellers due to the incident.
The Beech B200 Super King Air at the airport is the same model involved in a fireball crash at London Southend Airport on July 13, which killed four people. One fire crew remains on scene.
The incident was responded to by West Midlands Fire Service, and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been informed. The airport has suspended operations as an investigation is carried out.
Approximately 100 flights were impacted, with some flights delayed for up to five hours and 21 inbound aircraft were forced to divert. Three people were assessed by paramedics at the scene. The plane landed just before 2 PM, and video showed it tipping to the side as it slowed.
Following the investigation and the reopening of the runway, Birmingham Airport has confirmed that flights are now allowed to begin departing. The airport is working diligently to get all delayed flights back on schedule as soon as possible.
