LOT Polish Airlines Takes a Leap with Airbus A220 Order

Airlines Company LOT Polish Responsible for Committing to Huge Airbus Purchase of More Than 80 Aircraft

Wowza! LOT Polish Airlines has just signed its biggest aircraft acquisition deal to date, agreeing to purchase 40 Airbus A220 planes, with the option for an additional 44. That's potentially 84 jets, worth around 4 billion zloty (€900 million)! This news dropped during the first day of the 2025 Paris Air Show.

This historical order means LOT is saying 'ta-ta' to Boeing and Embraer jets (for now) and 'hello' to Airbus for its fleet. It's a significant move that modernizes LOT's regional operations. Deliveries will begin in the summer of 2027.

Here's the deets: LOT is ordering 20 A220-100s and 20 A220-300s. The smaller A220-100 takes 108 to 133 passengers for a comfortable flight, while the A220-300 seats between 130 and 160. Every model comes equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines, which increase fuel efficiency, reduce noise, and cut carbon emissions.

Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister, said, "This is the largest order in the history of LOT Polish Airlines. It's a new chapter in the development of the company and Polish aviation." Michał Fijoł, LOT's CEO, shared that this choice came after a tight competition between Airbus and Embraer. He said, "We chose Airbus because they really, really wanted us."

The deal isn't just about the numbers; it strengthens Franco-Polish ties as part of broader European cooperation initiatives. It comes just weeks after Poland and France signed a bilateral agreement on defense and energy collaboration.

Tomasz Pasikowski, an aviation analyst at Warsaw-based consultancy Avionica, said, "The timing of this agreement reflects deepening relations between Warsaw and Paris. Beyond the commercial terms, it signals a political alignment on infrastructure and innovation."

In case you're wondering, LOT's current fleet consists of around 87 aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners, 737s, and Embraer E-Jets. The new A220s will gradually replace some Embraer models as part of LOT's plan to expand its fleet to up to 110 aircraft by 2028. That means more planes and more flights for us!

Not everyone's happy about this switch, though. Embraer, being LOT's former favorite, might feel a little left out. But hey, it's all about progress, right? LOT's fleet currently relies on Boeing and Embraer, but now there's a new kid on the block – Airbus!

This change brings some logistical challenges, like setting up new maintenance systems and training crews. But experts say the long-term benefits could be massive. Paweł Szymański, editor of Polish Aviation Review, said, "Introducing Airbus allows for operational flexibility and reduces dependency on any single supplier. It's a significant shift, both technically and culturally, for the airline."

The new A220s' extended range (up to 6,700 kilometers) will also help LOT reach new heights with regional routes within Europe and adjacent regions. LOT's CEO, Fijoł, confirmed that the jets will operate primarily from Warsaw Chopin Airport, with expansion planned for the Central Communication Port (CPK), Poland's future transport hub.

So there you have it! LOT Irish Beer may have to change its name, but LOT Polish Airlines is taking flight with their new Airbus A220s. It's a brave new world of aviation for LOT, full of endless skies and modern planes. Bring it on!
