If you're dreaming of cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles live at the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, Southwest Airlines has got your back!
The Dallas-based airline is ready to transport you there with a slew of extra flights. In preparation for the big game on Sunday, Feb. 9, Southwest has added 31 new flights to bolster capacity between Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and the home airports of the Super Bowl teams: Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Missouri's Kansas City International Airport (MCI).

- Feb. 7: Kansas City to New Orleans – 7 extra flights
- Feb. 7: Philadelphia to New Orleans – 5 extra flights
- Feb. 8: Kansas City to New Orleans – 2 extra flights
- Feb. 8: Philadelphia to New Orleans – 1 extra flight
- Feb. 10: New Orleans to Kansas City – 10 extra flights
- Feb. 10: New Orleans to Philadelphia – 6 extra flights
And the best part? These flights are already up for grabs! Although they might cost a pretty penny (one-way fares start around $700), they're likely cheaper than scoring a ticket inside the Caesars Superdome on game day.

Special Event Flight Magic by Southwest
Southwest Airlines steps up its game for significant events like the Super Bowl. Their relentless spirit extends beyond ordinary operations – they've added over 341 extra flights in the past year, linked to 61 events, including the famed Kentucky Derby and college football games.

Curious about how Southwest Airlines manages to produce such a wealth of special flights for major events? According to Southwest's Director of Current Schedules, Dan Smith, it all starts with a little planning and flexibility:

"We've been fortunate in the last six months as we took a somewhat conservative approach early in 2024 with our fleet. As a result, we ended up having some aircraft available to deploy for many of these big opportunities – college football games, NFL games, Taylor Swift concerts, you name it," Smith explained in an exclusive interview with TPG.
Having spare planes is crucial for last-minute flights to work. Otherwise, the carrier would need to interrupt regularly scheduled services – and the unhappy passengers along with them – that had already been selling for months.

Smith acknowledges this challenge, and eludes to changes in the regular schedule as unfavorable. Instead, Southwest "works around the existing schedule" to offer additional flights, focusing on areas like gate availability and overnight parking spots in both the departure and arrival cities.

Smith and his team spend the week prior to each championship game constructing contingency plans for all four possible finals, leaving out the defeated team's flights and publishing those that will actually fly after the game is over.
Planning ahead ensures that Southwest caters to the expected demand while minimizing disruption to their regular schedule.

A Peek Behind the Southwest Curtain

It's tough for Southwest to estimate exact fan travel numbers, but historical data is a big help, as demonstrated in the Kansas City Chiefs' third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
For events like these, Southwest leans on historical data to gauge demand and decide on the number of flights. Sometimes, they even repurpose flight numbers that hold a Super Bowl connection, although existing flights take priority.
Southwest's team of network planners, comprised of only four members, scrutinizes the competition's schedules for pockets of unmet demand but has to wing it when it comes to event-driven last-minute flights, as they don't always know the other airlines' plans.
If you're one of the lucky ones to nab a last-minute flight, don't expect a dramatic transformation – as Southwest's planes still line up to board, and there's no shifting to team colors. You might spot a few special touches, though, like unique flight numbers or Easter eggs meant to make the journey feel a bit more magical.
