Rivers State Governor Resumes Duties After Emergency Rule Lifted

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, returned to his duties on Friday, following the suspension of the six-month emergency rule that had been imposed on the state by the United States government. The emergency rule was lifted by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

Fubara's arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, quelled speculations over his whereabouts and was met with a warm reception from his supporters. Hundreds of Fubara's loyalists were waiting to receive him at the airport, and excited chants filled the air as he stepped off the plane.

The emergency rule was imposed due to a protracted political crisis between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. However, since the suspension of the emergency rule, Fubara has not publicly commented on his relationship with Wike.

Fubara's reinstatement ended the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, and President Tinubu directed Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume their duties with immediate effect.

Despite his formal resumption of office, Fubara was absent from the Government House on Thursday during the lawmakers' first plenary session since the emergency rule was lifted. Instead, he attended the session at the Assembly Quarters.

This was Fubara's first appearance in the state since his reinstatement, and his absence from the Government House where his supporters had gathered in anticipation of his return was noticeable.

The first plenary session of the lawmakers was held at the Assembly Quarters on Thursday, and Fubara's aircraft touched down at about 11:55 am on Friday. The suspension of the emergency rule marks a significant step towards political stability in Rivers State, and Fubara's return to his duties is expected to further strengthen this stability.
