The wild whims of stormy weather in south Germany wreaked havoc in multiple ways, leading to a harrowing experience on a Ryanair flight, unexpected landings, and damaged homes. On a stormy Wednesday night, a passenger plane, bound for Milan from Berlin, made a safety landing at Memmingen Airport following turbulent skies. Nine passengers and crew on board were left injured due to the extreme air disturbances.
As the Bavarian Air Administration refused a continuation of the flight, the airline provided buses for continued travel. Initial attempts to contact the airline for comment proved unsuccessful [3].
Elsewhere in the region, homes in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, bore the brunt of the storm, with several houses becoming uninhabitable. Strong winds suspected to have caused a "small wind spout" or mini tornado, ripped off roofs of several properties [2]. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in the region.
Authorities, however, are yet to confirm whether the culprit was indeed a tornado, with final details to be provided later in the day [1].
Ulm was not the only location facing the brunt of the storm. Northern Upper Bavaria, Upper Palatinate, and Lower Bavaria bore the storm's wrath, with around 90 fire service deployments across the regions. The incidents were mostly attributed to flooded drains, fallen trees, and wet cellars, with no injuries reported.
The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts further showers with brief and heavy rainfall, small hail, and gusty winds in northwest Germany today. There's a possibility of stronger thunderstorms and local heavy rainfalls of up to 20 liters per square meter, with isolated storms featuring hailstones of up to two centimeters [4].
