On the unfortunate day of the crash, Vir took to his social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, to acknowledge the catastrophe while also extending his support to Air India's crew:
The tragic crash of the London-bound Air India flight AI171 in Ahmedabad took the lives of 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, the aircraft struck a building near BJ Medical College's doctors' hostel in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar locality. Alarmingly, only one person survived, believed to be a U.K citizen, Vishwaskumar Ramesh.
As investigations continue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the site and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu and home minister Amit Shah, who also visited the scene, described the level of devastation as "unimaginable." Investigations are ongoing, with the support of Boeing, but the cause of the crash remains a mystery.
