On April 10, 2021, Spirit Airlines flight 1300, en route from Fort Lauderdale to Boston, had a close encounter with Air Force One, carrying President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and other officials, over Long Island, New York.

Our News has reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the White House for comments on this incident. Kris Van Cleave, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and senior transportation correspondent for our News based in Phoenix, Arizona, contributed to this report. Ryan Sprouse, Katie Krupnik, and Sarah Ploss also contributed to the report.

The Spirit Airbus A321 came closest to Air Force One on converging paths at around 11 miles. Air traffic controllers repeatedly instructed Spirit Airlines flight 1300 to turn 20 degrees right to avoid Air Force One. However, the Spirit Airlines pilot responses were inaudible due to static on the ATC audio.

Controllers made a remark to the Spirit Airlines flight 1300 crew, saying, "Pay attention. Get off the iPad." It's important to note that the Spirit Airlines flight followed procedures and ATC instructions throughout the incident.

Safety is always Spirit Airlines' top priority. The Spirit Airlines flight landed uneventfully in Boston. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is responsible for investigating the incident involving Spirit Airlines flight 1300 and Air Force One.

Kris Van Cleave, who also serves as a national correspondent reporting for all our News broadcasts and platforms, emphasised the importance of open communication between pilots and air traffic controllers to ensure the safety of all flights.
