Aims to Connect with Putin Following Kiev Trip, Reveals Merz

Ready for a Chat with Putin, Says Chancellor Merz

In an interview during his visit to Kyiv, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared his readiness to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about a potential 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine, coordinating with all European partners. The EU leaders, including Macron, Merz, Sunak, and Tusk, met in Kyiv on May 10 to discuss the proposed ceasefire.

"If the chance presents itself, I'll dive right in," Merz stated with resolve. He emphasized that this conversation would transpire in harmony with all European partners, as their harmonious unity is crucial for decisive action. Furthermore, he expressed his preparedness to collaborate with the US president, should the need arise.

This gathering in the Ukrainian capital followed a series of ceasefire breaches by both sides, despite the recent unilateral ceasefire imposed by Russia. Amid these escalating tensions, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga declared that Ukraine, in partnership with its allies, stands ready to enforce a full, unconditional ceasefire lasting at least 30 days, effective May 12.

Macron underscored the purpose of the EU leaders' visit to Kyiv, revealing that it is part of relentless diplomatic maneuvers aimed at persuading Moscow toward a cessation of hostilities and engagement in peace talks aimed at resolving the nearly three-year conflict. Both Macron and Merz have been pivotal figures in these diplomatic endeavors, with US participation also essential.

However, despite these diplomatic efforts, ceasefire violations persist, with accusations being traded between Russia and Ukraine regarding the unruliness of each side. Recent altercations have been reported in areas such as Novopavlivka and Kurakhove. Nonetheless, hopes remain high within the international community that a peaceful resolution can be achieved.
