Aid flights from Germany to Gaza have commenced
The Gaza Strip is on the brink of famine, according to UN reports, as the region grapples with increasing chaos and a humanitarian catastrophe. In an effort to alleviate the crisis, Germany has announced an additional five million euros for the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to support bakeries and soup kitchens in the region.
The conditions in Gaza, as reported by eyewitnesses and local helpers, are chaotic, with many cargoes being looted by crowds before they can reach the warehouses. Israel has recently allowed larger deliveries by land, following global criticism of the situation of the Palestinian civilian population. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) is working to rebuild the humanitarian land route with UN organizations.
Aid workers consider airdrops of aid goods from the air to be ineffective and expensive due to the small quantities that can reach the coastal strip. While airdrops can rapidly deliver some humanitarian supplies when land access is blocked, they do not match the volume, reach, safety, and controlled distribution possible with ground transport.
The German Armed Forces have begun an aid operation in the Gaza Strip, dropping 14 tons of food and medical supplies. However, aid groups and observers have expressed skepticism about airdrops over Gaza, describing them as more expensive and less effective than ground deliveries. The core bottleneck remains political and military: unless Israel opens all crossing points for unimpeded humanitarian access, large-scale relief remains severely hindered.
Germany's humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territories since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023 has amounted to over 330 million euros, with more than 95% going to the Gaza Strip. Aid deliveries with trucks are more effective in distribution and less likely to injure or kill people on the ground in a densely populated area like the Gaza Strip.
The collapse of any social order in the war-torn Gaza Strip, exacerbated by Israel's blockade policy, is contributing to these conditions. Aid organizations warn that the dropped food items can make it difficult for certain groups, such as injured people, people with disabilities, or single parents with children, to access the aid goods.
The majority of the victims in the Gaza war, triggered by the attack by Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations on Israel on October 7, 2023, are said to be women, minors, and the elderly. The war has resulted in the death of over 60,000 Palestinians and over 145,000 injuries.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is funding a field hospital of the Maltese in Gaza City, and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) emphasized that the aid flights can only contribute a small part to the situation and bring the most necessary things to the people.

- The chaotic conditions in the Gaza Strip, as reported by eyewitnesses and local helpers, necessitate urgent policy-and-legislation interventions to ensure unimpeded humanitarian access, particularly by opening all crossing points, as indicated by aid organizations.
- As the Gaza Strip faces a potential famine due to war-and-conflicts, it is essential that political leaders prioritize general-news regarding the region, such as the crisis in Gaza Strip, during their discussions in the realm of politics, and collaborate with UN organizations to implement effective policy-and-legislation changes for the betterment of the people.
