Aid Distribution in Gaza Halted Amid Violence and Security Concerns
Aid facilities in Gaza remain shut for an additional day
Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid centers remain closed, causing a prolonged wait for much-needed supplies, due to ongoing safety issues and recent mass-casualty incidents near GHF distribution sites.
In a statement on online networks, GHF announced the extension of the centers' closure for additional "maintenance and repair work." Following the completion of these tasks, opening times will be communicated. At present, the Israeli army has classified the aid distribution areas as "combat zones" and advises travelers to follow designated routes.
The initial wave of violence and fatal shootings around two GHF distribution centers triggered the closures earlier in June. The UN, international aid organizations, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have reported numerous casualties in the vicinity of these centers. The Israeli military attributes these incidents to confrontations between civilians and security forces or Israeli forces responding to threats[1][2][3].
Yet, challenges persist, as sporadic reopening and closures of the centers make it difficult for civilians to access aid. The situation deepens the hunger, fear, and sense of desperation in the Gaza Strip, with supplies becoming sporadic and unpredictable[2].
Since May 26, GHF has launched its operations in the Gaza Strip by establishing four centers in the region's southern and central areas. In the first week of operation, over seven million food packages were distributed to residents of Gaza[1]. However, the ongoing violent incidents near the centers have raised concerns about the safety of aid delivery and distribution.
The situation remains fluid as both the GHF and international backers consider additional support to address these weaknesses and ensure the safety of civilians, as well as the effectiveness of aid delivery under the current conditions[3][2].
What's the upshot?
- Aid centers operated by GHF in Gaza are closed due to deadly violence and mass-casualty incidents near distribution sites.
- The closure intends to address organizational improvements, logistical adjustments, and security concerns.
- Repeated closures and violence have deepened the crisis in Gaza with an increase in food insecurity and the risk of further violence as desperate crowds gather at open sites.

The Commission has been asked to consider a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, given the ongoing political tensions and conflicts surrounding war-and-conflicts and general-news.
The extension of aid center closures in Gaza amid unsafe conditions and mass-casualty events mirrors the increased need for safety measures as nations continue to address concerns such as Gaza Aid Disruptions, Violence and Safety Concerns, and the Hunger Crisis in the Gaza Strip.
