Aid convoy featuring Greta Thunberg embarks from Tunisia, bound for Gaza
A flotilla, comprising around 20 boats, has set sail towards the Palestinian territory of Gaza from Tunisia, carrying aid and pro-Palestine activists, including Greta Thunberg, the renowned Swedish climate activist. The flotilla's goal is to break Israel's blockade and establish a humanitarian corridor to the Palestinian territory.
The flotilla, affiliated with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, left from Bizerte, Tunisia's northern port, with the last vessels departing at dawn. The prominent figures of the flotilla have been split between the two largest coordinating boats to avoid concentrating all visible personalities on a single vessel.
Greta Thunberg boarded in Bizerte, joining European Parliament member Rima Hassan, who was detained aboard the Madleen sailboat in June and fears further attacks. Yasemin Acar, who helps coordinate the flotilla from the Maghreb, posted images of the departure on Instagram, captioning them: "The blockade of Palestine must end" and "We are leaving for solidarity, dignity, and justice."
The flotilla's journey comes after two earlier attempts were blocked by Israel in June and July. The Global Sumud Flotilla experienced drone attacks on two consecutive nights last week, an incident denounced by Tunisian authorities as a "premeditated aggression." An investigation has been announced to determine the culprits behind the attacks.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an organization behind previous Palestine flotillas, is linked to Hamas activists, including Zaher Birawi in Britain. The flotilla includes vessels that left in recent days from Corsica, Sicily, and Greece, converging in Bizerte.
The flotilla's departure was repeatedly postponed due to security concerns, delays in preparing some of the boats, and weather conditions. Despite these challenges, the activists remain determined to reach their destination and bring attention to the ongoing blockade of Palestine.
As the flotilla makes its way towards Gaza, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for Palestinian self-determination and the international community's role in addressing this complex issue.
