AI-generated Dhurandhar image sparks Sikh community outrage over turban depiction
An AI-generated image from the upcoming film Dhurandhar The Revenge has sparked controversy. The manipulated visual shows actor Ranveer Singh's character smoking while wearing a turban, leading to strong reactions from the Sikh community. Director Aditya Dhar has since addressed the issue with a public statement.
The disputed image was created by altering official promotional material from the film. It falsely depicts the character Hamza/Jaskirat, played by Singh, smoking in a turban—a representation that the Sikh community found deeply offensive. In response, they filed an FIR against the filmmakers, citing a separate scene where actor R Madhavan was seen smoking while reciting lines from the Dasam Granth. Madhavan later clarified that the cigarette had been extinguished before the lines were delivered.
Director Aditya Dhar condemned the AI-generated content and emphasised the film's respectful portrayal of the Sikh community. He urged audiences to trust only verified, official material and warned that those spreading misinformation would face strict action. Dhar also highlighted the broader issue of deepfake content in film promotion, noting that the industry has yet to establish clear preventive measures. The incident follows growing concerns about AI-manipulated media, with experts in fields like radiology already flagging potential risks. While no formal enforcement policies exist for film advertising, the case has reignited discussions about the need for stricter oversight.
