Ahead of the Cup, Red-White Essen is on the brink of a potential coup - Uwe Koschinat hints at impending changes
Rot-Weiss Essen Fall Short Against Champions League Giants
In a thrilling encounter at Stadion an der Hafenstraße, Rot-Weiss Essen put up a valiant fight against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, but ultimately came up short in a 1-0 loss.
Uwe Koschinat, Essen's coach, expressed his disappointment following the loss, particularly about Ramien Safi's missed chance just before halftime. Koschinat felt "crushed" after the game, but was pleased with his team's performance, calling it "very presentable" and "high-intensity."
The third-division team showed great resilience, growing stronger after the first 20 minutes when Borussia Dortmund appeared dominant. Despite the difference in division, Essen put up a strong fight, with Safi coming closest to scoring for the home team.
The game took place on Monday evening and was sold out with 19,300 spectators. Rot-Weiss Essen's next match in the 3. Liga is against SV Wehen Wiesbaden away on Friday.
SV Wehen Wiesbaden, who have made a good start in the 3. Liga, earning four points from their first two games, will be a tough opponent for Essen. The coach of Wehen Wiesbaden for the match against Rot-Weiss Essen is Nils Döring, who has been the coach since 2024.
Rot-Weiss Essen's focus now turns to the 3. Liga, where they have started with two draws. Their previous match in the league was a draw against TSV Havelse. Despite the setback against Borussia Dortmund, Essen are still considered contenders for promotion in the 3. Liga.
Uwe Koschinat had identified Serhou Guirassy as a key player for Borussia Dortmund in the build-up to the game, and Guirassy did not disappoint, scoring the only goal of the game in the 79th minute. Essen lost some of its threat after the break, but Borussia Dortmund also struggled to create clear chances.
Rot-Weiss Essen will need to work on their efficiency in the 3. Liga if they want to challenge for promotion. Their next match against TSV 1860 Munich, who they drew with in their first match, presents an opportunity to bounce back and get their first win of the season.
