HSV Prepares for Bundesliga Return Amidst Mixed Preseason Results
Hamburger SV (HSV) is gearing up for a challenging first round of the Bundesliga competition against Oberligist FK Pirmasens this Saturday, following a mixed preseason performance.
The previous record of friendly matches for HSV has been disheartening, with five losses in six games and a goal difference of 2:14. Notable defeats include a 0:4 against league rival Freiburg, a 0:4 against Olympique Lyon, and a 0:2 against RCD Mallorca.
Despite the shaky results, Merlin Polzin, the promotion coach, remains optimistic. He believes that the key to progress and success lies in energy and competitive stress stimuli under game conditions. Polzin emphasizes the importance of maintaining good energy on the pitch as a foundational building block.
In the test match against SC Flensburg Weiche 08, the focus was not on results but on giving mostly less-utilized players competitive minutes to generate stress stimuli in a match setting, aiming to build energy and momentum. Polzin acknowledges the fragile and somewhat incomplete nature of the squad but remains confident that there is still time to improve and stabilize the team dynamics before the league campaign fully intensifies.
Polzin expects maximum performance from the players going forward, highlighting that every position—including goalkeeper—will be contested based on form and contribution. Heuer Fernandes and Daniel Peretz are in competition for the goalkeeper position at HSV, with a decision to be made after the cup match.
HSV is without Yussuf Poulsen and Jean-Luc Dompé for the cup match against FK Pirmasens, but they are making good progress and expected to return to training next week. Alongside Poulsen, Bakery Jatta and Immanuel Pherai are still out for HSV.
The club is still planning reinforcements for HSV, with Merlin Polzin making it clear that the club had consciously and with full conviction pushed certain things to continue developing, including a system change with a more defensive approach.
The cup match in Pirmasens is the last fixture before HSV's Bundesliga debut. The league game against Borussia Mönchengladbach will be broadcast on Sky. Polzin referred to difficult moments that occurred in the preparation in individual friendly matches as an investment in the future, describing the preparation as a learning process.
Merlin Polzin, coach of Hamburger SV, apologized to media representatives for not being able to fulfill all autograph and photo requests due to numerous fans during the holidays. The euphoria surrounding the traditional club remains undiminished as HSV returns to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence.
