Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on July 3 and 4, 2025, with a focus on boosting sustainable agriculture, rural development, and strengthening ties with the agricultural community in the region.
The minister's agenda includes several important meetings and events related to key agricultural initiatives and academic engagement. On July 3, Chouhan will hold a high-level review meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar, engaging with senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and the Department of Rural Development. He will also participate in a Consultative Committee meeting to review two major national initiatives: Natural Farming and the National Oilseeds Mission. In the evening of July 3, he will meet Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Raj Bhavan.
On July 4, Chouhan will be the chief guest at the sixth convocation ceremony of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) held at the Shalimar Convention Centre, Srinagar. At the ceremony, degrees will be conferred on 5,250 students, and 150 gold medals along with 445 merit certificates will be distributed to meritorious students. The event will be attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha (Chancellor) and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah (Pro-Chancellor) of SKUAST-K.
During his visit, Minister Chouhan will also interact with horticulture scientists and farmers in the orchards, visit saffron and apple orchards within the SKUAST-K campus, and engage directly with farmers during his outreach in Jammu. His visit aims to understand local practices and challenges in the orchards. The minister's meeting with 'Lakhpati Didis', women who have achieved financial independence through self-help groups, is in Khonmoh village to highlight rural women's empowerment.
Chouhan's visit follows his outreach in Jammu under the 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan'. The minister's efforts in Jammu and Kashmir are aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices, fostering academic excellence in agricultural sciences, and encouraging people to visit Jammu and Kashmir, underlining the region's natural beauty and peaceful environment despite recent terror incidents.
The Union Agriculture Minister's meeting with senior officials on July 3 is a part of his political agenda, where he plans to discuss Natural Farming and the National Oilseeds Mission.
On July 4, during the general-news event of the sixth convocation ceremony at SKUAST-K, Minister Chouhan will confer degrees on students and emphasize rural women's empowerment by meeting the 'Lakhpati Didis'.
