The German Federal Ministry of Agriculture is set to introduce a new regulation, announced by Minister Alois Rainer, that will see a change in the food options served at official events. Under the new policy, events will offer a variety of choices, including vegetarian, meat, and fish products.
This departure from the previous regulation marks a significant change from the vegan-only food policy that was implemented under former Minister Cem Özdemir. During his tenure, the Ministry served only vegan food at official events to promote sustainability and healthy eating. However, the current approach is more inclusive and diverse, recognising a place at the table for plant-based alternatives alongside traditional animal-based products.
The Scientific Advisory Board (WBAE) advising the Ministry now calls for an ideology-free debate and protein diversification, endorsing plant-based, fermentation-based foods, and cultivated meat as part of a sustainable food system, rather than an exclusive vegan diet.
Minister Rainer, a member of the CSU political party and a trained butcher, has expressed tolerance towards different dietary habits. He stated that he understands if someone wants to eat vegetarian or vegan, and he does not believe it is his place to dictate what others should eat. Rainer has also diplomatically addressed the meat-heavy eating habits of his party chairman, Markus Söder, stating that Söder simply enjoys his food.
The new regulation also specifies that the products served at these events should ideally be regional. Rainer does not intend to start a "culture war" over food choices, including on plates or in refrigerators. Instead, he values the quality of food, as long as it is fresh and tastes good.
It is important to note that Cem Özdemir, the previous Agriculture Minister, is a member of the Greens political party. Under his regulation, only vegetarian food made from 100% organic products was served at official ministry events, with exceptions for specific occasions such as the Open Day or receptions during the Green Week.
Rainer's stance suggests that he is aiming to combine environmental, health, and economic benefits by promoting a more balanced approach that embraces innovation and protein diversification, rather than strict exclusion of animal products.
