Minister of Agriculture Maintains Export Limitations Due to Animal Health Issue - Agriculture Minister announces no impediments on exports despite current animal illness concerns

The HOOF-AND-MOUTH DISEASE (HMD) continues to pose challenges several months after its emergence in the area of Märkisch-Oderland. This was made clear by Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstaedt (SPD) during a meeting of the agricultural committee in the state parliament in Potsdam. Exports are piling up, as there remain limitations on the shipping of pork halves and processed goods to Great Britain, Korea, and Japan, according to Mittelstaedt.

This agricultural calamity, known as HOOF-AND-MOUTH DISEASE, has recently resurfaced in Hungary. Mittelstaedt refuted doubters who suggested the disease could have originated from Germany, asserting that no livestock had been transferred from the districts of Märkisch-Oderland and Barnim to Hungary. In Hungary, the outbreak occurred in a cattle herd, and over 1,400 animals were eliminated.

News of the HOOF-AND-MOUTH DISEASE in Germany first surfaced at the beginning of January. It had been over 35 years since the disease was last detected on German soil. The illness was discovered in a water buffalo herd in Höhne, within the Märkisch-Oderland district. Thankfully, no further cases have been reported.

Following transport stoppages to essential export markets, the Brandenburg agricultural ministry has calculated a loss of more than eight million euros for the Brandenburg agriculture sector alone. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has applied for EU aid for farmers affected by the disease.

Community aid for the development of the farmers in Märkisch-Oderland could be crucial due to the ongoing impact of the Hoof-and-Mouth Disease. The Agriculture Minister, Hanka Mittelstaedt from Potsdam, confirmed that the disease has led to export limitations for pork and processed goods to several countries, including Great Britain, Korea, and Japan. Despite the detected disease case in Hungary, Mittelstaedt assured that no livestock was transferred from Märkisch-Oderland and Barnim districts to Hungary.
