Agreement Reached: Europe set for Minimum Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2035 among Member Nations
The European Union's proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 has hit a roadblock, with several member states expressing reservations or opposition regarding the climate change target.
According to Elisa Giannelli from the think tank E3G, the current situation represents the best option for the European Union at this stage. However, the proposal faces opposition from countries such as Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic, who cite concerns over economic impact, energy security, and reliance on fossil fuels.
On the other hand, Denmark, Sweden, and Spain are pushing for the proposed emission reduction, aiming to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce the costly consequences of extreme weather events.
The European Copernicus service recently announced that carbon emissions from this summer's forest fires were the highest ever recorded in Europe since records began 23 years ago. These fires, coupled with the recent heatwaves, have cost France a staggering 10 billion euros. The heatwaves also led to a 70% increase in mortality in European cities.
The 10th postponement of the adoption of the European climate target for 2040 and the introduction of a low range to define the 2035 determined national contribution sends a signal of uncertainty about Europe's decarbonization. The climate action network has expressed regret that Europe is not meeting its climate ambition, despite the summer's high carbon emissions and mortality rates.
As the EU grapples with these challenges, it remains to be seen how the climate change target will be met and whether the member states can find a compromise that balances environmental concerns with economic and energy security needs in Europe.
