Agitator pledges to intensify demonstration, aims to approach Government Mansion
In the heart of Bangkok, the July 1 rally has gained momentum, with demands centring primarily on the immediate resignation of suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Led by Pichit Chaimongkol, the leader of the "Uniting the Power of the Land for the Defence of Thai Sovereignty" group, the protests are a direct response to the political turmoil that ensued after Thailand's Constitutional Court suspended Paetongtarn on July 1.
The protesters, numbering between 2,000 and 10,000, are expressing their support for the Thai armed forces while calling for Paetongtarn’s removal. The rally, organised by nationalist groups opposing the Shinawatra family, is a genuine call to defend national sovereignty, according to Pichit Chaimongkol. He insists that the group's actions are within the legal framework.
The protests reflect broader dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the deadly May 28 border clash with Cambodia and the resulting displacement and casualties. The protesters accuse Paetongtarn of jeopardising Thai sovereignty by apparently favouring Cambodian interests, as highlighted by a leaked phone call.
Security measures for the rally are substantial, with up to 2,000 police officers deployed to manage the crowd. The protesters are also calling on coalition parties to exit the government. Pichit Chaimongkol has denied allegations from Pheu Thai Party politicians that the group's demonstrations are a call for a military coup.
The only demands of the "Uniting the Power of the Land for the Defence of Thai Sovereignty" group are for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign and for coalition parties to withdraw support from the government. Pichit Chaimongkol has stated that the group's demands are not for anything that could be construed as support for a coup.
The political crisis continues to escalate amid judicial proceedings that could formally remove Paetongtarn from office. The goal of the rallies and protest leaders is to oust the government quickly, emphasising patriotism and national unity under the armed forces over perceived leniency from Paetongtarn towards Cambodia. The protests serve as a clear demonstration of the Thai people's desire for a change in leadership and a commitment to protecting their nation's sovereignty.
