Dolores Huerta Urges Opposition to Trump Ahead of 2026 Midterms

Dolores Huerta, a legendary activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, is urging Americans to mobilize against former President Trump ahead of the 2026 midterms. Huerta, known for her decades-long activism for farm laborers and immigrant rights, has consistently criticized Trump's immigration policies and advocated for immigrant protections.

Born in New Mexico and raised in California, Huerta took a leading role in the US farmworker movement in the 1960s, alongside the late activist Cesar Chavez. Despite raising 11 children while going through a divorce, Huerta's commitment to the union movement meant she was an absent mother and still spends more time on her work than with her many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Huerta believes that racism is an illness that has contaminated the political system and is being played out by Trump through his immigration policies, which she considers inhumane. She argues that the current Republican-led immigration crackdown is "absolutely atrocious" and has caught many people off guard.

In February, Huerta's foundation helped drive an ongoing boycott against the retail giant Target over its decision to end pro-diversity programs following Trump's election. Huerta believes that billionaire business owners can "pull Trump's strings" and that using tactics like boycotts can influence them to move against dangerous policies of Trump.

Huerta also believes that religious interests played a role in the swell of Latino support for Trump in the 2020 election. Church leaders and lobbyists who are influential with Hispanic communities used issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights to "intimidate" Hispanic communities into voting Republican.

Employers in various sectors, such as agriculture, hospitality, and services, are realizing how much they need hard-working immigrants. Many immigrants have been sent to countries with which they have no connection, such as the 252 Venezuelans who were sent to a notorious El Salvador prison before being repatriated to their homeland as part of a political deal.

Huerta is a galvanizing figure for those seeking to fight against increased immigration raids targeting farmworkers under the Trump administration. She believes that Trump's promise to carry out the largest deportation operation in US history could yet backfire. Huerta is urging everyone to prepare the electorate to vote in the 2026 midterms, which could reshape the US Congress and move the country away from Trump's dangerous policies.
