In a daring operation, Ukrainian drones targeted four Russian military bases, reportedly damaging or eliminating 41 aircraft, including strategic bombers such as Tu-95 Bear, Tu-22M Backfire, and Tu-160 Blackjack. Could this be the key to altering the course of the war? Let’s delve into experts’ possibilities and warnings against premature evaluations!

Military strategist Gustav Gressel suggests the Russian air assaults on Ukraine with cruise missiles might decline due to the damage inflicted on the aircraft. The availability of bombers determines the size of these air assaults. However, the impact on the conflict as a whole remains uncertain, according to Gressel.

Military expert Colonel Markus Reisner sees potential restrictions for the Russians, who presumably had around 100 aircraft before the attack. A significant number of the operational jets damaged in the attack might be out of commission, which could have immediate effects. Watch closely in the following weeks and months to determine if the frequency of air attacks against infrastructure and civilian targets decreases, advises Reisner to ntv.de.

According to the Ukrainian domestic security service, they successfully targeted heavy bombers and at least one A50 reconnaissance aircraft. As these aircraft typically coordinate air operations and pinpoint targets, their destruction could be problematic for the Russian air forces, according to Gressel. Ukraine only has six to seven operational A50s remaining, making the loss of several of these significant, especially in terms of glide bomb launches.

However, Frank Sauer, a security expert, considers the attacks as “absolutely spectacular” and “extremely noteworthy,” but stresses that Russia still possesses enough aircraft for continued nightly assaults on Ukrainian cities. One Tu-95, several of which were destroyed in the attack, can carry between six and fourteen cruise missiles.

Rob Lee, former US Marine officer and analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, thinks Ukraine's attack has implications for Russia's ability to launch cruise missiles and for Kremlin troops' resource deployment. Yet, he does not foresee the attack deterring Russia from continuing its aggression against Ukraine.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský sees a potential reduction in Russian combat aircraft violating NATO airspace by 30 percent as a result of the attack, a development that would bolster Ukraine's role as a vital ally.

Overall, Ukraine's daring operation has the potential to reshape the conflict, however, experts caution against rash conclusions. The loss of air assets could necessitate strategic adjustments, but Russia is likely to bolster its airbase defenses and re-evaluate its objectives to counter Ukrainian capabilities.

Enrichment Data:

  • The Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian aircraft may lead to several strategic implications, including reduced airpower capabilities, shifts in operational focus, and enhanced defense measures.
  • The success of the operation could prompt Russia to reassess its military objectives and tactics, potentially leading to an increased focus on covert or asymmetric warfare strategies.
  • Internationally, the attack might strengthen support for Ukraine, increasing military aid and diplomatic backing, potentially leading to further isolation of Russia diplomatically.
  • The attack might impact the morale of Russian forces and the confidence of the Russian public, potentially leading to internal pressure for changes in military strategy or leadership.
  1. The drone attacks on Russian aircraft by Ukraine could potentially alter the community policy within Russian military forces, as they may reassess their employment policy in light of the loss of key assets.
  2. As the global community grapples with the implications of these drone attacks on Russian aircraft, politics might shift towards forging stronger alliances with Ukraine due to increased general news coverage of the conflict.
