Russian Saboteurs Caught in Germany Plot

Three suspected Russian agents apprehended for potential sabotage activities - Agents in question detained following allegations

Here's the tight lowdown on a shocking suspicious plot against German cargo transports by three Ukrainian nationals. Accused of acting as agents for sabotage by the Federal Prosecutor's Office, these guys have found themselves on the wrong side of German law. There's speculation these boys are under the wing of Russian state authorities.

The arrests went down weeks ago, starting with a man nabbed in Cologne by the cops on a Friday. He was whisked away to Karlsruhe and faced the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice later that night. The very next day, state cops in Baden-Württemberg arrested a suspected accomplice in Constance. Both are behind bars. The third suspect was picked up in the Swiss canton of Thurgau and is set to be extradited to Germany soon.

The alleged plan was to send heat-seeking packages to recipients in Ukraine. To scope out transport routes, the Cologne arrestee shipped two test packages with GPS trackers at the tail end of March. One of the co-defendants gave the order. The third suspect helped assemble the package contents. It seems money may have been the motive, but there are whispers of pro-Russian leanings among the suspects, one even boasting previous connections to Russia.

German security services have been observing a trend among Russian actors recruiting perpetrators, sometimes from the criminal underworld, to execute espionage and sabotage activities for cash. The reason? Sanctions and increased vigilance by Western intelligence services have complicated the use of professional spies by Russia.

Remember the burning air freight package in Leipzig back in July? It came close to causing an airplane crash, but luckily for everyone, the package caught fire on the ground at the DHL logistics center instead of during the flight. Luckily, there's currently no evidence linking this case to the recent arrests.

But not all sabotage is about violence, sometimes it's all about stirring up a fuss. Case in point: the police were investigating the suspicion that a wave of car sabotage in several federal states was controlled from Moscow back in February. Preliminary investigations suggest the saboteurs received cash from a Russian client for their actions, according to security circles.
