Agency receives new first deputy leader
Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has welcomed a new deputy director, as Gabriele Monschau takes on the role of Vice President and Deputy to the President. The 51-year-old German jurist succeeds Philipp Wolff, who has moved to the Federal Chancellery as a department head and coordinator of federal intelligence services.
Monschau, with over 20 years of experience within the BND, brings a wealth of expertise to her new position. Her career at the agency has seen her hold roles in procurement, as a station chief abroad, in the human resources department, and in the leadership staff in Berlin. Her profile is distinguished by her strategic vision, international expertise, and strong leadership skills.
In her new role, Monschau will oversee the central functions of the German foreign intelligence agency, working alongside two other deputy directors, Generalmajor Dag Baehr and Ole Diehl. Baehr, a military affairs expert, is responsible for overseeing military affairs within the BND, while Diehl primarily deals with the service's external affairs.
The BND's structure includes multiple deputy directors, each with their own areas of responsibility, reflecting the complex nature of the agency's operations. The appointment of Monschau is part of a broader restructuring at the BND, with Bruno Kahl expected to leave his position as President after nine years to become the German representative to the Holy See in Rome. Martin Jäger, the current German ambassador to Ukraine, is set to take over as the new BND President in September.
As the BND continues to adapt and evolve, the new leadership team, under the guidance of Gabriele Monschau, will play a crucial role in shaping the agency's future. With their combined experience and expertise, they are well-positioned to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
