After the Stallorder scandal: Piastri's perspective
In the world of Formula 1, the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix is causing a stir, especially at McLaren. The team's leading drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, have held clarifying talks with the team management following the Italian Grand Prix.
The discussions between Piastri and Norris revolved around their race strategies in Formula 1, a topic that has been the centre of attention recently. The Australian driver, who leads the drivers' championship with a 94-point advantage over Max Verstappen, stated that you can't plan every single scenario in racing.
The Italian Grand Prix saw an interesting turn of events. Piastri, who finished third, had to let Norris, his British teammate, pass him again after a botched pit stop. This wasn't the first time such an incident occurred between the two drivers. In the same race, Norris was called in after Piastri, which can often be a tactical disadvantage in Formula 1.
Despite these incidents, both Piastri and Norris have followed the team's instructions so far. The team manager at McLaren with whom they have discussed race strategy is Andrea Stella.
Piastri, who admitted that he did not deserve the second place with his speed in the Italian Grand Prix, was asked if he would have given up his position even for the win. His response was, "It wasn't about that."
Meanwhile, Lando Norris finished second in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year. The McLaren team could potentially celebrate another constructors' championship win in Baku, with Piastri's 31-point lead over Norris in the drivers' championship and their strong performance in the previous races.
However, the team's management has made it clear that there is no designated number one driver at McLaren. This means that the decision between Piastri and Norris will be made on the track, as Piastri himself stated.
As the Azerbaijan Grand Prix approaches, the race between Piastri and Norris is one of the key stories to watch. The tight streets of Baku provide a unique challenge for the drivers, and it will be interesting to see how the McLaren duo navigates these challenges.
